Satveer delivers sessions to students aged 11+ covering general mental health and self-harm.
Students engage very well with the sessions and appreciate her delivery style and honesty about her own experiences.
You can book Satveer for a full day, half day or a single session. Sessions can be for students, staff, parents or a combination of groups. An example full day may consist of 5 x PSHE sessions, a staff CPD and a parent’s awareness session.
What does a typical session cover?
- Importance of talking about our mental health and emotional wellbeing.
- Factors that can lead to emotional distress. How to manage distress.
- What and why people turn to self-harm.
- What are suicidal thoughts and why people have them?
- How to support yourself / a friend if they are struggling.
How long do you need?
A minimum of 50 minutes, the average length of a lesson. Shorter sessions are more lecture-like and in my experience, students do not respond well to this.
How many students in a session?
Ideally no more than an average class size (30) however, each school’s needs will be considered. Assemblies of a year group can be delivered however these do mean interaction is reduced.
Which year group should we target?
Satveer believes that all year groups should have the session as students of all ages self-harm. Previous schools have had me in to deliver to the whole school over a day in assemblies, and then I return annually to deliver to a specific year group. Thereby all students have had a session during their time at the school. Satveer has previously delivered age appropriate sessions to yr5 and 6 students (9-11 year olds) which were very well received.
Do you upset the students?
Satveer doesn’t intentionally upset students, however very often the topic can resonate with a student (or staff member) and they can become upset. Every care is taken to ensure students are aware that they can leave the session at any point and where to seek support in and out of school if they are triggered by any of the session’s content.
